20 years ago, a handful of people in Franklin County decided the kids here deserved somewhere to go after three o'clock. Four counties later, that promise still stands - and this fall we're celebrating it. Come to an event, buy a plate, sponsor a table, or give a little every month. However you show up, you're keeping it going.
Our 20 Years
20 years of whatever it takes.
20 years ago, somebody decided these kids were worth whatever it took.
They did not have a building worth bragging about. They did not have a budget. What they had was a conviction that four North Carolina counties should not be places where a child ages out of childhood with nowhere to go after three o'clock. So they made a promise with no limit written into it. Not we will provide the following services. Not we will help those who qualify.
Whatever it takes.
That is a reckless thing to promise. It commits you to needs you cannot see yet. And for 20 years, across Franklin, Vance, Granville and Warren, the people who work in these Clubs have kept it anyway.
Whatever it takes has meant a lot of unglamorous things. Finding a way to get a child to the Club when there was no way to get a child to the Club. A staff member learning a family's situation well enough to know what not to ask in front of the other children. Staying open in years when staying open was the whole achievement. Knowing every name.
Every parent who walks a child through our door for the first time is asking one question, even if they never say it out loud: will you actually be there? Whatever it takes is our answer. 20 years is the evidence.

Here is what 20 years buys. It buys the right to be believed. Any organization can put "whatever it takes" on a wall. Very few can point at two decades and say: we meant it, and here is the record.
Today that record is four Clubs across four counties, serving more than
2,600 kids and teens a year. Of the members who come regularly,
96% move up a grade on time. For every dollar given, roughly
nine dollars comes back to these communities. And this year one of our members was chosen to represent North Carolina's Clubs in the Governor's Page Program — a week in Raleigh among press conferences and public officials, because somebody at a Club told her she belonged in that room.
In Granville County alone, average daily attendance is up
67% since 2024, and the Club now supports young people from
six local schools. This past summer 150 enrolled and 108 came through the doors on an average day. At the Club they do not simply have a safe place to belong — they have a place to experience. This summer that meant riding Amtrak trains, visiting science museums, and camping out under the stars.
A Club experience costs about $5,000 a year for one member. We do not pass that on to families. Parents pay $15 a week for after-school, and when a family cannot manage even that, a scholarship covers it. Nobody is turned away over money.
Which brings us to the one thing 20 years of whatever it takes has never had:
a steady way to be paid for. Support arrives in bursts. A barbecue in September. A breakfast in the fall. A good year, then a thin one. Meanwhile the promise runs every single day, in four buildings, for children whose needs never once consulted our fundraising calendar.
So we are not asking you to fund a program. We are asking you to fund a standard - the one that says a child who walks in gets whatever it takes, and nobody checks the balance first.

$20 a month is the number this campaign is built on. Not because it is large, but because it is repeatable, and repeatable is what lets a three-person office plan a year instead of surviving one.

is what a year of safe, high-quality Club experience actually costs for one member. We do not pass that cost on to families.

a week is what parents pay for afterschool programming, about $375 for eight weeks of summer camp. Scholarships cover families who need more help.
